What is the difference between acrylic and latex. Technology, properties, application.

The latex mixture consists of a concentrated pigment, various dispersions, preservatives, solvent and water. Such materials often contain substances that improve the properties of the resulting coating. As for acrylic paint, it usually does not contain impurities, but has concentrated elements.

Acrylic paints have not yet been in great demand due to their high cost. However, with the development of technology, prices for such paints are now quite affordable. In terms of their characteristics and parameters, these paints are superior to other compositions. They are very economical and can be used for both exterior and interior decoration.

Many consumers are wondering what is the difference between acrylic and acrylate mixtures. There is not much difference between them. The acrylic paint is the same as acrylate. It’s all about marketing strategies – it’s better to sell material under different names, creating the illusion of variety.

Latex paint is used for interior and exterior decoration. It contains a certain substance that prevents the formation of mold. There are several popular varieties of latex paints. For example, use textured compositions to create beautiful reliefs on substrates.

Polyvinyl acetate:

Polyvinyl acetate paint is a form of latex. It is commonly referred to as “water-based” or water-based paint. It is based on PVA. Such products do not contain solvents, have a low aroma, good adhesion properties, and can be washed off with water from tools and skin. An equally important advantage is the relatively low price.

The disadvantage of this paint is its washing of from surface even after complete drying. It is not recommended to use it when painting facades. In addition, it is smeared (chalk effect) – clothes can get dirty. The disadvantage of this coating is frost resistance, so in winter it is not suitable for painting unheated rooms.

Styrene Butadiene:

Styrene butadiene paints, also known as water based latex paints. These connections are resistant to wear and tear and moisture. It is not so easy to wash off such coatings from the substrate. However, styrene-butadiene mixtures have their drawbacks – they do not like light. Under the influence of ultraviolet light, this color loses its original appearance. This material is suitable for interior decoration.

Acrylic Silicone:

Acrylic silicone paints are light and moisture resistant. In addition, are distinguished by high vapor permeability, which is especially important when painting facades.

Mixtures of acrylic silicates are often offered instead of silicate and silicone paints. Such paint and varnish finishing materials are in many ways similar to silicate paints, but their prices are lower.

Differences:

Acrylic and latex blends are very similar in many ways. However, the composition of acrylic differs from mixed versions of latex in its content.

acrylic – latex acrylic. In both cases, these are synthetic resins. It is worth considering one more fact – natural latex obtained from rubber wood is not added to these paints.

Such coatings often do not differ from each other, since they have similar physical and operational properties. When dry, these finishing materials form a flexible protective film. However, acrylic is superior to latex in the strength characteristics of the final coating, as it is more resistant to moisture and abrasion.

How to choose?

To choose the color you need, you need to choose the right color and understand all its physical and operational properties. Particular attention should be paid to the degree of gloss – there are several of them:

– completely matte – SM or 0 ÷ 5;
– matte – M or 6 ÷ 10;
– partially frosted – PM or 11 ÷ 29;
– semi-gloss – PG or 30 ÷ 59;
– glossy – G or 60 ÷ 89;
– fully glossy or 90 ÷ 100.

You should also pay attention to properties such as thixotropy and opacity. Thixotropy affects how quickly the paint thickens, does not run off, does not drip from the tools, thixotropy increases the viscosity of the paint upon application, as a result it flows easily and does not leave marks when dry.
