What are wooden glazes and when should they be used?

Wood can swell and shrink, or change its volume when exposed to moisture. This property is characteristic of wood, but is often disturbing when structural parts are made of wood. In particular, components such as windows and doors must be protected from moisture, otherwise they may be deformed. On the other hand, elements such as fences require only medium protection from moisture, because swelling and shrinkage of parts does not damage them and does not reduce their functionality.

Untreated wood must be covered to protect and preserve it. In particular, outdoors, wood is exposed to moisture and other factors that can damage or destroy wood components. The purpose of the coating is to protect the wood from the sun (UV radiation), moisture, pests, bruises and other fungi that damage the wood. Of course, in addition to protection from the sun, wind and rain, the glazing coating of the wood also creates a visual effect and refreshes the appearance of wooden objects or building components. To protect the tree from harmful fungi, such as bruising, wooden surfaces outdoors must first be impregnated with a wood primer.

A glaze is a completely non-covering coating – one after which the structure of the application surface is still visible. Glaze is mainly used for wood, because it protects the wood and at the same time preserves its pattern.

Wooden glazes are divided into three types, and each of these has its own field of application: glazes tend to be liquid, medium and thick.

Liquid consistency glazes

Liquid glazes are deeply absorbed into the wood and do not form a film on the surface. As a result, the coating does not peel off over time, and repairs are quick and easy. This type is ideal for parts that do not require stable dimensions ( parts that can swell and shrink under the influence of moisture), such as fences and board cladding.

Medium consistency glazes

The consistency of the material is in the middle between liquid and thick. It penetrates deeper into the wood than a thick glaze, but allows less moisture to penetrate than a liquid glaze. It is ideal for parts that require relatively stable dimensions, such as window boxes and a lattice frame.

Thick glaze

A thick material that forms a film on the coated surface and protects against moisture penetration. It is ideal for parts that require stable dimensions, such as windows and doors.
